Maintaining Your Rain Garden Because the rain garden will be visible to the community and is serving to inspire residents to build their own gardens, it is important to create a maintenance plan for the garden. Consider who will be responsible for maintaining the garden and how often it will be maintained. You may wish to delegate maintenance responsibility to one or multiple individuals. A properly designed rain garden should not be much different than maintaining any other garden-weekly watering and weeding when the garden is first planted, followed by annual mulching, pruning, and replacing any dead or diseased plants. Rain gardens should also be inspected regularly for potential erosion problems and sediment accumulation.
